Inherently conductive polymer coatings react chemically with substrate metals and with ambient oxygen.  One can eavesdrop on the metal-polymer chemistry:

Corrosion-detecting sensor compounds, embedded in the coating, indicate incipient corrosion, allowing timely remediation of problems.
